LED Retrofit

LED Retrofit

Organizations around the world seek to lower energy costs, any small to medium size business consumes between 15000 to 50000 kWh of electricity. LED (light-emitting diode) can help give every building a sustainable future. It is the most significant change the lighting business has seen since the invention of electric light itself. LED Retrofitting and Energy Rebate is something all businesses should consider.

Traditional Bulbs

Traditional incandescent lamp heats a thin filament to produce light where more than 90 percent of energy is lost in the form of heat. The more recent Fluorescent (CFL) lights work by passing electricity through mercury vapor and exciting the phosphorus coating to produce UV light. A 2011 study estimated that some fluorescent lights emit UV radiation outside of the safe range for our eyes and may cause eye-related diseases. The mercury vapor in fluorescent lights, which is a neurotoxin that can cause a variety of damaging effects on your health.

LEDs enable sustainable energy but without the fallbacks of traditional light bulbs. LED’s uses 20 to 90 percent less energy, it produces virtually no heat and is mercury-free. They are very dynamic, enabling to create a wide range of designs providing an energy-efficient solution for Industrial lighting to household luminaires. LED’s last much longer, at least 5X times longer than traditional fluorescent lights. LED’s are much easier to disassemble and recycle, resulting in much smaller environmental footprints compared to traditional lighting.

What is LED Retrofit?

LED retrofit means replacing your existing lighting with new and better lighting technology, preferably to increase energy efficiency and the quality of light in the facility. Many businesses are retrofitting to save energy to cut costs but also to cut the environmental impact of overconsumption of energy.

Labor Savings: A small or medium-sized business could use bulbs 365 days a year, on average a business uses bulbs 12 or more hours per day. Traditional lights have a life span of 1,500 to 15,000 hours, this makes businesses to replace bulbs twice or thrice a year. With an LED bulb the life span is 35,000 to 100,000 hours, the durability of LED requires replacement not very often. While LED lights cost more than their older counterparts, the trade-off will more than pay for itself each year. Therefore, businesses would realize a profound amount of savings in maintenance and products.

Energy Savings: LED lights use considerably less energy (less wattage) than their inefficient counterparts that they replaced. Calculating the different wattage of each bulb, the number of bulbs in operation, the number of operational hours during the year, and the cost of electricity per kilowatt-hour will provide the amount of savings per bulb per year.

Businesses are surprised at the result and wonder why they didn’t start your retrofit project years ago.

HVAC Savings:  Older lighting products generate a significant amount of heat and that heat spreads throughout the space, increasing the temperature of the room.

In an air-conditioned space, that means that extra energy will be needed to cool the space down. LEDs emit virtually no heat resulting in lesser energy spent on air conditioners.

Why retrofit now?

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) ensures the reliability of the province’s power system, balancing the supply of and demand for electricity on a second-by-second basis and directing its flow across high-voltage transmission lines so it’s available to Ontarians when and where they need it.

IESO is providing rebates to businesses and building owners on energy-saving retrofitting projects.

LED Retrofit projects that are pre-approved, are eligible for the IESO rebates. Businesses can get a certain percent rebate depending on the usage of energy and project size. The process of getting pre-approved can take a few weeks. Businesses are acting fast to get pre-approved.
